I want to share with you about my inspirations in music today and the songs that have carried me through when times begin to get tough. As we are just 2 weeks away from the 20th anniversary of the tragic passing of Kurt Cobain, I being to ponder why I have always loved and admired Nirvana's music. First thing's first, the members of Nirvana are all individually commanding musicians. They are all masters of the respective instruments they play. Kurt is 1 of a kind and his voice is legendary when it comes to being emotionally piecing and it cuts so clear that you will never find anyone else like him; and with it comes the angst, aggression and violence; I just love it. Dave hammers home the desire of the song on the drums with purpose, intent and power. Krist stitches everything together on the bass and drives and pushes the song along beautifully.

Although I can't say I can relate to Kurt and cannot appreciate just how tough he has had it; from stories of an emotionally tormenting childhood to the drugs that endlessly mocks and laughs at his fragile state of mind, I can say that I appreciate Nirvana's songs on the level that I too at times feel like life has dealt me a shitty hand. At times, I just need to blast Nirvana to tune out the world and soak up the emotion and energy.

Cheers,
Pete

  1. Hehe Nirvana inspires me a lot too! "In Bloom" and "Smells like Teen Spirit" are two of my favourite workout tunes, while in general I love listening to "All Apologies" and "Heart-Shaped Box" while on transit. When I feel angsty, "You Know You're Right" is another favourite :P

Definitely classics for a reason, thanks for inspiring me to try them out as they're now one of my top bands :)
